Sunseeker announced that its new Hawk 38 achieved a top speed of 68.7 knots (79mph) during sea trials on the beautiful waters of Lake Como in Italy before the first prototype hull was further tested in the UK. Fabio Buzzi, winner of 43 world speed records and 55 world titles, was the man at the helm in Lake Como, having designed the stepped hull of the high-performance day boat, which features Besenzoni racing seats and is Sunseeker's smallest model. Buzzi also worked with Sunseeker on the XS2000 and XS Sport almost two decades ago. Estimates for the finished boat with console, carbon-fibre roof, deck mouldings and fittings remain 62-63kts (70mph+), as previously announced by the yard. Sunseeker also reported 'incredibly low noise and vibration levels, even at maximum speed', due to the all-new patented structural-foam hull technology. The inflatable Hypalon 866 Stab tubes and Mercury 400R engines also contributed to the boat 'delivering the dynamic performance it was designed for, matched with exceptional tum-in and grip'. Christian Marti, CEO of Sunseeker, said: "We are thrilled with the results achieved during this initial period of testing on the Hawk 38 prototype. Performance racing boats are in the brand's DNA and the Hawk 38 is our most technologically advanced performance boat ever. These results prove that we are the technical experts in this field."
